The saying ‘sharing is caring’ has rarely been more appropriate. We care about the world as much as we do about our customers, one of the reasons to start a pilot with Amber (now MyWheels) for electric car sharing. What if part of our Itilians could share electrical cars instead of each having their own fossil lease car: how much CO2 could we reduce on a monthly basis?
We worked with Amber as customer to create and continuously train an optimization algorithm to define how many cars are needed at which car sharing hub. Now it is time to also become a customer of Amber, and put the concept of electric car sharing to the test: how do our Itilians experience Amber for their business travel? Here are our first takeaways after almost a month of testing.
First, a quick overview on how Amber works. Before silently speeding away in one of the brand-new BMW i3’s, you must install the Amber app on your phone. With that, you easily order a ride at your preferred Amber hub, get a car assigned, unlock it with your phone, and drive away. At the end of your ride you drop it off again at one of the Amber hubs, lock it with the app and check out. Payment is per minute.
Be aware that the electric cars are automatic and completely silent – so do not expect bikers to hear you when you pass them. Also, it is a good idea to do some planning when it comes to the chargers available on route. Chargers are not always available in regular parking garages – they are of course available at any Amber hub.
While piloting, we encountered some practical learnings.
Overall, it is just a very cool experience. Driving a brand-new car with the perks of electric driving – without noise, and with very speedy acceleration – is simply a lot of fun. In addition, the fact that you know you are sharing a car whereas normally your car is idle for 80% of the time just feels really good. And the fact that Amber cars are readily available, along with the ease of use and great customer service they offer, makes this a no-hassle alternative to driving your own car.
So what about the future? We will happily continue our pilot program and hope it accelerates as rapidly as the BMW i3…
